Kern came to Wofford in 2002 from the University of the South (Sewanee, Tenn.), where he served as its head coach for 12 seasons. While there, his teams posted a record of 126-92-11, including a 15-3 mark in his final year. The Tigers garnered the school’s first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) title and earned an NCAA Division III Tournament berth in 2001. He was named the SCAC Coach of the Year in back-to-back years, 2000 and 2001.

Prior to arriving at Sewanee, he served one year as the assistant coach at Springfield (Mass.) College. The Pride went 17-2-2 during the 1989 campaign and were ranked as high as No. 11 in NCAA Division II.

Kern received his bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Hartwick (N.Y.) College in 1988. While enrolled at the institution, he earned his stripes as a member of the Hawks’ soccer team. He was a four-year starter on squads which reached the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Division I Tournament each year, including back-to-back Final Four appearances in 1984 and 1985.

Professionally, he holds an Advanced National Coaching Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).

He also serves on the coaching staff of the Region III Olympic Development Programs (ODP).

A native of Columbia, Md., Kern and his wife, Chapman, have a son Brooks (13) and a daughter Emma (8).

In May 2005, Wofford head men's soccer coach Matt Kern announced the hiring of Rafe Mauran as an assistant to his staff.

Mauran enters his third season with the Terriers this fall after previously serving as an assistant coach for Southern Conference for Davidson since August 2003. While with the Wildcats, he was involved with both the men’s and women’s programs overseeing the training sessions for the goalkeepers. He also assisted in all aspects of game management, in addition to analyzing match video, participating in recruiting trips and assessing prospective student-athletes.

In addition to his duties at Davidson, Mauran was the assistant director of coaching for the North Mecklenburg Youth Soccer Association (NMYSA).

Prior to taking the jobs in northern Mecklenburg County, Mauran was the Boys’ Soccer Coach/Aide at Franklin County High School (August 1998-May 1999), assistant men’s soccer and track & field coach at the University of the South (August 1999-June 2001), assistant men’s soccer coach at Springfield College (August 2001-May 2003) and the soccer director at Camp Danbee (Summer 2003).

He earned his bachelor of arts degree in psychology from the University of the South (Sewanee) in December 1998 before completing his master’s work in psychology at Springfield in May 2003. His master’s concentration was mental health counseling.

While an undergrad at Sewanee, he played collegiately for Kern. During his senior season of 1998, he posted a 0.71 goals-against average in net to rank 17th nationally. Mauran was an All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference honoree in 1998 and chosen as the league’s player of the week once each during his junior and senior campaigns.

Mauran is a member of Psi Chi, the national honor society in psychology, since 2001 and was a 1997-1999 member of the Order of the Gownsmen, an academic honor society.

He will be involved in all parts of the Terrier soccer program, including game-day preparation, recruiting, scouting and travel.

In January 2005, he received the Advanced National Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
